So you spend your whole adult life working your way up the career ladder, getting married, catching up on your mortgage, and when you’re finally in a financial position to afford the car of your dreams, guess what? It’s time to invest in a station wagon with a DVD player in the back, playing a steady stream of Spongebob Squarepants and Disney movies.
True, when you have children, you have certain responsibilities and obligations, and there are some things you’ll have to sacrifice in the name of giving your children the attention they need. However, there’s this nutty idea floating around that, when you have kids, the fun part of your life is over, so forget the second honeymoon to Bermuda, forget going out to see any movie without talking animals in it, and most importantly, forget ever driving that Lamborghini you’ve spent your whole adult life drooling over, right? Wrong. Just because you’re a parent doesn’t mean that you’re no longer your own person with your own needs, desires and ambitions, and there’s no excuse to give up on those ambitions just because you have a family now.
It goes without saying that your children come first and, obviously, your primary vehicle probably will be something with enough seats to hold the entire family. However, if you make a decent living, if you’re an adult who can handle the responsibility of maintaining a pre-owned exotic car, then there’s no reason that your second car can’t be a high powered Ferrari.
Essentially, what it comes down to is this: If you’re in a position where you can comfortably raise a family and you can afford a pre-owned luxury car, then you’ve earned the right to drive one. To be blunt, your own life does not end when you have your first child.
Think of it this way; can you think of anyone more deserving of a weekend cruise in a pre-owned BMW than a hard working parent? Truth be told, buying your first exotic car after having kids, you’ll probably have developed a higher appreciation for that freedom, that thrill of cruising in your luxury car than you could have ever had before.
Raising a family is taxing, it requires a lot of hard work and a lot of sacrifice. It is likewise, of course, incredibly rewarding. In the end, though, a parent really does deserve some time alone now and then, and more importantly, you deserve to indulge in your own interests, interests that have absolutely nothing in the world to do with 3D animated talking fish.
In short, as a parent, you need to stop and take a day to yourself now and then (as absurd as that sounds, it is possible!), and there are few methods of taking some time to yourself as liberating as driving a car that is, in fact, your car, and not a family wagon loaded up with blankets and juice bottles….And at the very least, your kids will never be embarrassed when you pick them up from school.
No matter what car you decide on there are 3 things you should always do:
1. Get a CarFax
2. Have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic/performance center
3. Go through a reputable dealer
